Emaqi uses an AI to do their translations. It's MTL. No idea how much TL-checking or editing they do. Apparently their LLM is "proprietary" and "specialized for manga," but somehow I doubt that means much. But given they had 6,000 volumes available when their platform launched in May of 2025, I doubt there is much human TL checking going on. /a/ TLs usually suck shit too but hey they are volunteers

So I read through the first few volumes. The Emaqi translations aren’t terrible - but they do start from AI as a base. As I mentioned before, supposedly their translation LLM has been tuned specifically for Japanese manga, but there’s no way to determine what that means exactly since it’s proprietary. They don’t use an open-source model or one of the public-access models like Gemini or Grok. They do proof-reading, but it's by a Japanese person who is ESL (but still fully credited as the "translator"). The lettering/typesetting is also done by a Japanese person. It's hard to tell just how much checking they do or whether they correct for nuance, and how much they leave as raw LLM output. There aren't any major problems, but there's definitely a tone shift between the first two volumes and the following volumes here. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the scanlation that starts from volume 3 though - normally I expect /a/ scanlations to be quite awful, but my main point of reference there comes from manga dating back to the late 2000s or early 2010s. Whatever group of /a/ guys is working on this is doing a good job.
